7 ways of overcoming negative self-image- Part 7.
Firstly, congratulations on continuing your journey from self- hate to appreciating yourself. It's a tough journey but so worth the effort.
This week's concept ends the 7 concepts of overcoming negative self image with 'Living with perfect'.
What came up when I googled 'Perfection'.
‘The state or quality of being perfect’ ‘A person or thing considered to be perfect’ ‘The action or process of improving something until it is faultless’
I find it absolutely insane that being perfect is compared to faultless. How can someone or something be faultless? Nature itself makes mistakes everyday. There is no perfect tree, flower, fruit and by God volcanos/mountains are created imperfectly. So how can a human being be perfect?
Even whilst I wrote this, I was so adamant this was going to imperfect. Why am I even talk about being perfect?
Growing up can be a struggle or wonderfully vibrant. I saw the world in a naïve way. Believed everyone was good. Everyone was caring and self-less. I believed adults were 'perfect' and knew exactly what they were doing with their lives.
Majority are walking zombies, sleep walking through their lives and validating that it is acceptable to live life the way they do. On repeat, looking forward to a day off from their working life. To then find at the end of life regret not taking the plunge to dream big and action those dreams.
I aspired to be perfect. Perfectly smart. Perfectly responsible. Perfectly wanted and loved. Perfectly have my life in check, happily married with a house and kids. For some people, that's not on their agenda at all. Some want to be perfectly alone, away from people, travel the world or stay put exactly where they are because that makes them happy. One similarity; to be happy.
Wanting to be perfect is a killer of dreams.
Perfection is not a look. I came to the truth that people I have met from all over the world do one thing regardless of culture, religion and beliefs. We all love our families, care about our families, friends and the community, want a healthy life, want more time, just want to be happy and feel free. Does perfection have any connection to this?
No. Love and happiness is far from perfect. Relationships and communities are far from perfect. Self image is far from perfect. Being happy and feeling free is not an image or specific goal.
Perfection is your perception. Perfection isn’t an image. It isn’t a person.
Perfection is you. Percept not perfect who you are. Perceive yourself as whoever you want to be.
A human brain is so beautifully sophisticated and so stupid at the same time. We can trick the brain into thinking whatever we want it too; good or bad.
So how do you change what perfection is?
Easy. Believe perfection does not exist.
Aim for imperfection. Aim for your higher self. Be present for your present so when you are in your future you are present for it. Read that a few times. It's a real tongue twister.
Exercise:
Write about a time you were happy and did not have a negative self-image.
When you write about this moment or phase of your life that you were happy in. Imagine the feelings you had, not the circumstances. Think about how perfectly imperfect you were.
You’ve experienced personal progression. You have progressed into a self-awareness that is as radiant as the sun rising.
If you have been a happy you before, you can be a happy you again.
Keep this in mind. The happy you still exists. Like the water that turns into steam and then up to the clouds to return as water onto earth. That is you, you were never lost. You just needed to return to yourself in a different form at a different time of your life.
Soon enough, you start to remember timeless moments. Moments that replay in your mind. That is what you call perception of your own perfection. You will have some amazing moments you loved. Dig deep enough it will be there.
Perfection is overrated. Be yourself. Working on yourself everyday to be the best version of yourself. You don’t ever reach perfection because it does not exist.
You shape yourself through this process. You have the ability of making yourself into whatever you want.
